| "ROLL BACK" -a classic taichichuan posture from the Yang Family Style. This posture captures the essence of Taichi practice: the ability to step back and yield to a stronger force, in order to neutralize it's power. |
The internal martial art of Tai Chi Chuan is deeply rooted in Taichi principle and philosophy, where the essence of the art is to properly balance hard, fast and powerful movements with soft, slow and subtle movements. The look and quality of taichichuan's internal and external movements resembles the ease by which water can effortlessly flow over, around, and into harder more solid surfaces such as rocks and steel.

Chang San Feng (1279-1368 A.D.) the legendary Taoist Sage and creator of the Tachichuan system, was inspired by the way in which water effortlessly flows in streams and by the way animals move naturally. He applied taichi principle to specific martial forms he had learned from his Shaolin Temple training and combined them with Taoist Chigung (life-force cultivation practices) breathing methods, to create a sequence of movements that are primarily done in a slow-motion manner, like softly swimming in a calm lake.
Taichichuan is simultaneously a self-defense based internal martial art, a self-healing energy regulation method and a spiritual self-cultivation path. Practice forms and supporting exercises first emphasize a smooth and continuous flow of energy, and then secondly, a more vigorous usage of energy, faster practice speeds and fighting applications are trained.
Regularly practicing taichi greatly strengthens the legs and feet, opens all the joints of the body and energetically grounds one's center. The over-all training greatly increases Chi (life-force/ bio-electric energy) flow, helping to stabilize one's spirit by making deeper connections between the body and mind.
